WHITE OAK - (QUERCUS ALBA)

A symbol of strength and beauty, it is no surprise that the Oak tree is the National Tree of the United States. The White Oak tree grows straight and to magnificent heights within the forest. In our region of Northwest Pennsylvania, you will not find many sub specie of white oaks like you can in the Southern & Midwestern regions of the country. Our Northern White Oak produces very uniform color and a tight grain.

Characteristics & Specifications

White Oak - 100% Rift Sawn Characteristics

  • Very straight grain – Planks will almost blend together.
  • We offer 100% Rift only in widths 2 ¼” – 5”. NOFMA (rule book) only requires 75% of the board to have rift characteristics.
  • Wider plank rift is available, but not as 100%.
  • Wide plank rift is VERY difficult to accumulate as a result of where rift comes from in the tree. (See Hardwood Cutting & Grading 101)
  • Very stable floor and recommend for over radiant heat and homes near water.
  • Very versatile in design, however more common in modern homes.
  • Typically offered in Clear Grade, but available in natural & select.
  • Stains well to achieve a wide variety of color.
  • Tight growth rings due to Northern Appalachian lumber.
  • Consider Rift Only Red Oak – It’s less expensive and more available.

White Oak - 100% Quarter Sawn Characteristics

  • Medullary rays throughout every board.
  • Classic floor—used in homes built late 1800s.  
  • 100% Quartered Only in widths 2 ¼” – 12” – NOFMA only requires 50%
  • Narrow Quartered is VERY difficult to accumulate as a result of where rift comes from in the tree.
  • Very stable floor and recommend for over radiant heat and homes near water.
  • Extremely versatile in design.
  • Stains well to achieve a wide variety of color.
  • Tight growth rings due to Northern Appalachian lumber.
 

Homes and furniture built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, used quarter sawn wood because of its beauty and dimensional stability.   White Oak was especially common due to the spectacular medullary rays displayed in the quarter sawn.
